THE ARRIVAL!

In this essay I am going to talk about Shaun Tan’s graphic novel, The Arrival. The Arrival is a book without words. My essay will explore the theme of immigration in the novel. Shaun Tan has written a lot about immigration and its importance to the story. Shaun Tan allows the reader to understand refugees and what they have to go through. Shaun Tan is a creative artist who creates wonderful things through images. His artwork shows different feelings such as worries and misery.

PARAGRAPH 1:                                                                                                                       Capture

In this picture Shaun Tan’s shows through many pictures that their are migrants everywhere and we come across them without knowing. In the 24 pictures Shaun Tan shows many females and males who are seeking a better life, He proves that immigration is very common and is happening in everyday life. His artwork shows much detail about immigration. The format Shaun Tan has laid out the photos makes us stop and think. The way Shaun Tan uses the amount of pictures shows more than using one picture. This relates to migration as he shows us that their are many kinds of people who are migrants and have had a rough start in life.

workPARAGRAPH 2:

In this picture we see that their is a sense of migration as Shaun Tan is using pictures of items that are taken with people on their travels. He shows migration by forcing the reader to look at the pictures and show that these items are items that people would use if they were migrating. This is related to migration as you can feel a sense of emotion that their could be a family member leaving because of a family problem which could be why he is leaving his family.

Shaun Tan shows similarity by using the flag of America in both pictures he also uses a migration hall were all migrants have to apply to begin their life in a new country. He uses Ellis Island as a setting as it is a place of hope for all migrants. If you had to leave your country you would probably come to Ellis island as it is a place were migrants have a chance to start their life again. Ellis Island is also used as it is the best chance of a migrant setting a new life in a new home. This is related to migration as the migration hall is were all migrants would go to register to enter a country.

PARAGRAPH 4:CaptureRTY

The statue of two people shaking hands shows peace and respect to the migrants which shows that the migrants feel as though they will fit in to Ellis Island and treated like any other person. The statue shows migrants that they will have a great start at this island and this is the place for them. Ellis Island has created a statue resembling peace as it is were all migrants get to start a fresh life. This related to migration as it is representing a chance of hope for all migrants entering the country, it shows to migrants that their rough life was the past and they can move on with hope in Ellis Island.

CONCLUSION:

Shaun Tan is a great author who was inspired by the people that came to Ellis Island. I found his book to be very interesting as he shows us what is happening through illustrations not words, which I think is a good idea as it allows the reader to understand everything about the story using pictures. I  think the way Shaun Tan drawings shows a lot as he shows all the detail in such simple pictures. That is why I find him to be an interesting author due to the way he thinks of things.
